Root Canal Treatment in Lagos

A root canal saves an infected tooth and stops the pain, usually in 1 to 2 visits, at our Ikeja and Yaba clinics.

Severe tooth pain keeps you awake, makes eating difficult, and stops you from working. It usually means an infection has reached the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth. A root canal removes that infection, stops the pain, and saves the tooth. At Dr. Reach Dental Clinic, treatment costs ₦120,000 to ₦350,000 and takes 1 to 2 visits at our Ikeja and Yaba clinics in Lagos.

Why save the tooth instead of removing it?

Pulling the tooth looks like the simpler fix, and on the day it costs less, at ₦45,000 to ₦70,000. The expense comes later. Neighbouring teeth drift into the gap and change your bite; chewing and speech get harder, and the jaw bone under the gap shrinks over the years.

Replacing the missing tooth with a dental implant costs around ₦1,200,000, or a bridge costs ₦250,000 to ₦750,000. Where the tooth can be saved, saving it is almost always the cheaper decision. Where it cannot, we will tell you plainly.

Signs you may need a root canal

  • Persistent sharp pain when you bite down, or deep throbbing that starts on its own.
  • Pain that continues long after a hot or cold drink.
  • A small pimple-like bump on the gum near the tooth, which is an abscess.
  • A tooth that has turned grey or dark next to its neighbours.
  • Swollen gums, or a jaw that hurts to touch.

Some infected teeth give no warning at all and are only found on an X-ray. If any of these sound familiar, book now rather than wait, because the infection spreads.

What happens during treatment?

  1. Numbing. The tooth and gum are numbed with local anaesthetic, so the procedure feels much like having a filling.
  2. Removing the infection. We open the tooth and clear the infected pulp from the canals inside it.
  3. Cleaning and sealing. The canals are disinfected and sealed so bacteria cannot return.
  4. Restoring. The tooth is rebuilt, and most back teeth are then fitted with a crown to stop them cracking under chewing.

Each visit takes 60 to 90 minutes, and front teeth are often finished in one visit. A badly infected tooth may need a second visit to let the infection settle. You can expect your tooth to feel tender for 2 to 3 days afterwards.

How much does root canal treatment cost in Lagos?

Root canal treatment at Dr. Reach costs ₦120,000 to ₦250,000. Front teeth have a single canal and sit at the lower end of that range. Molars have three or four canals, take longer, and sit at the upper end.

Most back teeth also need a crown afterwards, at ₦250,000 to ₦750,000, which is quoted separately. We tell you at your first visit whether your tooth will need one, so you know the full cost before treatment starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

No more than a filling. The tooth is numbed first, and the treatment removes the infection that was causing the pain. The tooth stays tender for 2 to 3 days afterwards.

Most back teeth do. A treated tooth is more brittle, and a crown stops it cracking under chewing. Front teeth can often be restored with a filling instead.

Wait until the numbness wears off, then avoid chewing on that side until the permanent filling or crown is fitted.

Most patients feel immediate relief from their initial toothache. You may experience some mild sensitivity for 3–5 days following the procedure, which is easily managed with  pain relievers.
